What is the coverage area of an ADS-B receiver?

Modified on Thu, 7 Nov, 2024 at 2:39 PM

The coverage area of an ADS-B receiver typically spans about 200-250 km (125-155 miles) in all directions.

However, coverage can extend up to 400 km (about 250 miles) or more with an ideally placed receiver—especially if the antenna is installed at a high elevation with unobstructed visibility in all directions.

Several factors influence the actual coverage range:

  • Antenna Height: The higher the antenna, the greater the potential coverage. Elevated placements, such as on tall buildings or hills, can significantly increase range.

  • Obstructions: Mountains, buildings, and other physical obstructions can limit line-of-sight coverage, particularly at lower altitudes.

  • Atmospheric Conditions: Extreme weather, like heavy rain or snow, or specific atmospheric conditions (such as temperature inversions or dense fog) can slightly impact signal range.

In summary, well-positioned receivers provide the best possible coverage, helping to enhance the tracking network for Flightradar24.
